Dear Melissa,

We would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank you for your support to the 2011 Miss Auckland Pageant. We are very appreciative of your generosity in donating Bella Vi makeup and vouchers to the contestants this year and we look forward to our relationship continuing.

This year’s show was a great success and it was wonderful to have had your involvement. The standard of contestants was very high and the judges had a very difficult task this year.

Jennifer Lambly, sponsored by Venture Travel and Events, is the newly crowned Miss Auckland 2011. Jennifer will go onto represent Auckland in the Miss Universe New Zealand Pageant in June 2012. We wish her the very best of luck and look forward with excitement and anticipation as she competes with other beautiful young ladies from around New Zealand.

This year the Miss Auckland pageant continued our support to the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation by raising funds. The contestants put in a fantastic effort in raising $8,500 for this worthy charity. We are so proud of their efforts.

Again we thank you very much for your generosity, support and for giving the 2011 Miss Auckland Pageant the opportunity to promote your beautiful makeup products. We wish you every success for your business in the coming year and look forward to having your support again next year.

Beautiful You investigates why New Zealand’s own Bella Vi Pure Mineral makeup is being embraced by the fashionable...

Fashion week is not only a chance for designers to showcase their collections - hair and makeup teams also present the latest looks, from the nice and natural to the avant-garde. Makeup for the shows this year was a complete dichotomy. Half the looks were absolutely simple, uncomplicated and bare and the other half were almost otherworldly. One of the looks that stood out the most without being over the top was by fashion week makeup newcomer Bella Vi, who created a stunning 1940’s inspired, bright and incredibly flawless face for Michelle Yvette’s show (hair by Grandeur in Parnell). A pure mineral makeup brand with a penchant for the natural, Bella Vi was able to evoke the exceptionally well groomed Hitchcock heroines who inspired the collection.

“Many makeup brands backstage are starting to use mineral makeup where they can,” says Melissa Furze, founder of New Zealand’s own Bella Vi Pure Mineral makeup. “By the end of the week the poor models’ skin is rubbed raw from wearing so many faces, and the idea of wearing more makeup was simply unbearable,” she said. “Good mineral makeup actually conditions and treats the skin, and provides the decent coverage and colour that is required for the runway.” In fact the fashion industry is totally enamoured by mineral makeup.

While natural makeup has been around for thousands of years (the Ancient Egyptians and Romans used to dye their skin and hair, stain their lips and cheeks, paint their nails, line their eyes and define their brows), modern has changed from the once all-natural products used by the Ancients to ones with added synthetics, preservatives and additives. Over the years these ingredients have been linked to severe skin allergies and conditions – not exactly healthy or fashionable. But recently fashionist discovered the amazing benefits of the combination of mineral makeup’s simple, pure and inorganic ingredients – a cosmetic alternative that is not only good for skin (even skin that has undergone cosmetic treatments), it makes users look as sexy and glamorous than ever before. “With pure mineral makeup you can achieve light, airbrushed-like coverage, that at the same time gives you a beautiful, translucent, natural dewy glow,” says Melissa Furze. “It covers up redness, fine lines or imperfections, offers flawlessly coverage, doesn’t look caked on or feel like a mask, and the ingredients aren’t harmful to you or your skin.”

Melissa Furze says mineral makeup formulas generally fall into two categories - those that take care not to use any synthetics and stay true to the original intent of pure mineral makeup, and those that do add the fillers, colours, fragrances, dyes, binders, preservatives and other chemicals to their formulas. “Although you can weed out at least some of the latter by reading the ingredient label, there still needs to be clarity in what you should be looking for,” she says. “Do your research, but if you want to be sure you are getting pure mineral makeup, Bella Vi’s mantra is natural, natural, natural,” says Melissa Furze. “That is something we are proud to stand by – so proud that all Bella Vi’s ingredients are openly listed on our website.”

BeautyNZ Article: Behind the Cover - Bella Vi
10 Jan, 2011

Around the mid 70’s, mineral makeup was first introduced to the cosmetic market and has since offered a more natural alternative to traditional makeup. However, the term “mineral makeup” can be misleading as many powerhouse cosmetic brands that label a makeup “mineral” don’t necessarily produce a product that contains 100% minerals or even a high percentage of minerals.

Pure mineral makeup is highly recommended by dermatologists as an ideal alternative to traditional makeup, in particular for sensitive or problem skins. The levels of coverage and colour options on offer have improved immensely since its conception and consequently mineral makeup has become a key growth segment in the cosmetic market. Due to the many benefits mineral makeup offers, you will continue to see its rapid growth in the cosmetic industry. However, as a consumer often we don’t have a full understanding of what we are really purchasing when it comes to this mineral phenomenon and it is incredibly easy to be misinformed by clever marketing and buzz words that hold little to no real meaning.

Unlike many of the low-levels in mineral makeup available in today’s market, New Zealand’s very own Bella Vi crafts their range using FDA approved premium quality minerals. Bella Vi products are comprised of pure natural mineral ingredients such as titania, mica and hematite. Their powders are inorganic and contain no moisture so bacteria can’t grow in them - making them naturally long lasting without the need for preservatives or parabens. This creates a truly pure mineral makeup.

Bella Vi is suitable for all ages and skin types, because it is also hypoallergenic, it is a particularly wise option for those who suffer from acne, rosacea, dry or sensitive skin. The silky weightless formula allows skin to breathe and doesn’t require large amounts product to achieve a long lasting, flawless complexion. In fact one of the many benefits in using mineral makeup is that because it is so concentrated, you only require a small amount of product and you can design the level of coverage to suit your needs.

What you end up with is a silky, weightless formula that looks great on the skin and blends in flawlessly. In particular, Bella Vi Mineral Makeup is becoming the preferred choice among many brides who want a flawless coverage that lasts all day but without the “cakey” look of traditional makeup. Because Bella Vi is composed of light-reflecting particles, skin will look flawless and natural in photos, even those taken with an indoor flash (traditional makeup often looks pale and unnatural in indoor flash photography).

Even the fashion industry has caught onto mineral makeup’s compatibility with the camera, Bella Vi are experiencing increased requests to provide makeup for runway shows including notably Michelle Yvette at New Zealand Fashion Week 2010. We will be seeing more of Bella Vi on the runway in future fashion events, Bella Vi’s mineral makeup fits perfectly with high fashion.

Bella Vi offers a diverse range of products including powders, eye shadows, lip-gloss, eye and lip liners, and even their own line of makeup brushes specially designed to apply the minerals, Bella Vi have every element covered. Not only does mineral makeup provide a lightweight coverage but it is also easy to apply, simply buff onto the skin with Bella Vi’s soft kabuki brush, using a circular motion and simply build up the coverage until you’re happy. Because minerals are water resistant, they won’t crease or smear and you will rarely need to touch up during the day.

Now that summer has arrived there is nothing worse than having thick layers of foundation clogging up your pores. Bella Vi is the ideal choice of makeup as it withstands extreme heat and humidity. Mineral makeup is the ideal choice to help achieve the “perfect airbrushed coverage” for you and your skin. Fashionable, Naturally
01 Nov, 2010

The fashion industry is enamoured by a new cosmetic favourite: mineral makeup.

But recently fashionistas discovered the amazing benefits of the combination of mineral makeup’s simple, pure and organic ingredients – a cosmetic alternative that is not only good for skin, it makes users look as sexy and glamorous than ever before. “With pure mineral makeup you can achieve light, airbrushed-like coverage, that at the same time gives you a beautiful, translucent, natural dewy glow,” says Melissa Furze, founder of New Zealand’s own Bella Vi Pure Mineral makeup. “The fashion industry has truly embraced it because it covers up redness, Fine lines or imperfections flawlessly coverage, doesn’t look caked on or feel like a mask, and the ingredients aren’t harmful to you or your skin.”

The Tauranga based company have been working with Kiwi labels the likes of Trix&Dandy, Doosh, Ketz-ke and Sable&Minx on makeup for shows and photography, and at Fashion Week 2010 did runway looks for Michelle Yvette. “We are excited to be working with New Zealand fashion brands to achieve looks that are fashionable AND healthy,” says Melissa“It is a great opportunity to show how Bella Vi is perfect for both every day wear and high fashion catwalk style.” But be warned: to most people, it may seem as if all these mineral makeup products should be pretty much the same, but this is far from the truth. Since there is no set regulation for what constitutes a ‘mineral’ makeup, any product containing minerals as a primary ingredient can be marketed as such - even if it contains a whole lot of other ‘less natural’ ingredients.

And one of the reasons mineral makeup is so popular is the smooth, natural, long-lasting coverage - a feat that some companies accomplish by pulverizing their minerals into microscopic or even nanoparticle size. “Minerals like zinc and titanium are safe when applied to healthy skin but in a micronized nanoparticle form, they can have very different and very toxic properties than that same molecule would have in its conventional size,” says Melissa. “Bella Vi does not have any nano ingredients.”

Melissa says mineral makeup formulas generally fall into two categories - those that take care not to use any synthetics and stay true to the original intent of pure mineral makeup, and those that do add the fillers, colours, fragrances, dyes, binders, preservatives and other chemicals to their formulas. “Although you can weed out at least some of the latter by reading the ingredient label, there still needs to be clarity in what you should be looking for,” she says. “Do your research, but if you want to be sure you are getting pure mineral makeup, Bella Vi’s mantra is natural, natural, natural,” says Melissa. “That is something we are proud to stand by – so proud that all Bella Vi’s ingredients are openly listed on our website.” www.bellavi.co.nz

Article: Headway Magazine

Melissa Furze from Bella Vi shares make-up tips, her favourite products and the looks we should be rocking for summer…

Which colours and looks are strong for spring/summer?
This season is all about soft diffused colour on the eyes, particularly corals, greens, pinks and purples. Colour is very bright but softly applied to create subtle definition. In contrast, lips are bold in every colour from red to pink and purple. The lip line is well defined but strong colours like red and purple are kept matte, whereas softer colours like pinks and corals are glossed up for a fresh effect.

What are your ‘can’t live without’ make-up items?
I love just plain old black and white liners for their hugely transformational powers. You can take a day look to evening using just that and some gloss. Concealer is a must to help conceal any imperfections and dark circles. I’m also loving bright nail colours at the moment and am addicted to a matte coral from Sephora I found overseas.

What do you think is the best thing about choosing to use mineral make-up?
Your skin instantly feels the difference. amazing how much of an improvement mineral make-up can provide to a damaged or problem skin. Even for normal skin types and all age groups, it gives that ethereal glow back to the face that we’re currently seeing on the red carpet.

What do you wish people would do more of with their make-up here in New Zealand?
Groom their eyebrows. Very few women seem to do it in New Zealand and it makes the biggest difference to your look. Try Bella Vi’s Blonde Brow Enhancing Powder or Coco Powder for brunettes. Even just a subtle definition with a neutral eye shadow instantly gives your face structure and takes years off. Just be sure not to over pluck – get a professional to shape your brows for the first time and then the maintenance at home is easy. Most of all don’t be afraid to get creative and experiment with colour!

What’s the easiest thing women on a budget can do to make the biggest impact with their make-up?
Get smart with your products. You don’t need seven eye shadows to create a look, you can always mix a couple together and create new shades. Also, a good mascara can double as an eyeliner, a lip colour can also work as a cream blush and with a little bit of concealer and a mineral foundation you’re pretty much there!

What’s the biggest make-up faux-pas in your opinion?

Overly glossed lips. Your hair gets stuck in it, guys hate it and in photographs no one sees anything but monstrous lips trying to take over the shot. Stick with a fine coating in the centre of the lips to give a ‘fuller’ appearance without them taking on a life of their own.

What product do you find that most people don’t have, that they should have in their make-up bag?

It is so important to use foundation primer and many women don’t. Primer acts as your base for your entire look; it stops your foundation from wearing off in patches, makes it last longer and you look so much better too. And because make-up is only as good as the tools used, select the right brushes for flawless application every time.

Which celebrity would you most like to make-over?
Courtney Love - because I like a good challenge.

How do you think make-up defines a woman’s personality?

I don’t think make-up defines who you are in any way. I think that looking good helps you to feel good about yourself and in turn, you feel more at ease to be who you are. There is definitely an art to make-up and it’s become a way for us to express ourselves and our individuality.

Get That Look
02 Aug, 2010

Here we show you how you can get that fabulous runway make up look with Bella Vi Mineral Cosmetics.

Michelle Yvette – Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice
Tucked away in Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour, Michelle Yvette showed her winter 2010 collection at Home Bar, as well as a sneak preview of what she promises for summer 2011. Fans were in awe amongst a sea of sequins and tulle. Such fabulously outlandish dresses mixed with beautifully tailored jackets, sheer stockings and suspender belts.  It was fantastic to see models smiling as they teetered down the red carpet in fabulous heels from Mi Piacci.

Runway Look – Naughty and Nice
The look was very 40’s inspired – perfectly defined bright red lips paired with soft dewy skin and lots of lashes.

Your Look
The idea behind this look is all about creating perfection, while keeping it natural and wearable.
Skin
Apply Cream Concealer where needed and to cover any dark circles around the eyes, nose and lips.
Finish off with our Mineral Foundation to give the skin a fresh dewy appearance.
Eyes
Apply Eyeshadow in Chantilly to the lids to give a dewy appearance to the eyes. Define the crease of your eyes using Eyeshadow in Coco Matte, starting at the outer corner of your lashline and blending up and in along the crease of the eye (where your eye socket is, just under your brow bone). Line the top lashline using Density Cream in Black. Apply two coats of Mascara Black to finish (or skip the second and apply a set of falsies). Lightly define the brows using our Brow Powder.
Cheeks
Use a highlighting powder like Star Dust just on the top of the cheekbones to intensify the dewiness of the skin.
Lips
Line the lips and fill in using Lipliner in Warm Sienna to create definition. Fill in using Lipstick in Flamingo. Apply a fine coat of Liquid Lipgloss in Strawberry Kiss in the centre of the bottom lip to give fullness.

Stand out student leads to beauty sponsorship
19 Jul, 2010

By Kathryn Calvert

When Bella Vi’s Melissa Furze ¬ first clapped eyes on Christchurch beauty therapist Emma McDonald, she knew the talented 20-year-old had something special. Emma, an aspiring student at the Aoraki Polytechnic in Christchurch, had entered the Bella Vi Fantasy/Glamour makeup competition offered to the institution’s beauty students last year… and had won.

“We could see she had a real talent, and had put a fantastic effort into her makeover,” Melissa remembers. “She was a stand-out.”

So when Emma, a talented ballerina and animal rights campaigner, approached Melissa’s Tauranga-based company asking if they would sponsor her for the Miss World New Zealand competition earlier this year, Bella Vi jumped at the chance. “We saw that she was a very talented young lady with much potential, and she enjoyed working with our mineral makeup,” Melissa says. “We were happy to support her in her quest and provide her with all her makeup for the campaign.” For Emma, the sponsorship cemented her place in the competition, in which she came second runner-up. The fulltime beauty technician/therapist and part-time waitress, who last year was awarded a City & Guilds Gold Medal in beauty therapy (awarded to only three therapists from around the world who scored 100% in the final exam and provided outstanding answers), says the experience was amazing. Sponsorship money for Miss World New Zealand, a non-pro¬ t entity, is used for items like rehearsal venue hire, programme ticketing, contestant training, costumes, lighting and sound, and entry fees and flights to the Miss World 2010 competition in Vietnam. Anything in excess of these costs is donated to Variety – the Childrens’ Charity, Emma says, because it can best distribute the funds to areas which need the most help at the time.

“There is another award for the contestant who raises the most money for Variety through sponsorship, fundraising and ticket sales, and this further helps to promote sponsors and allows the contestant who receives this award to be fast-tracked straight to the final eight contestants,” she says.

Bella Vi is no stranger to sponsorship. “We are a company that likes to give support, knowledge and future skills and training to our stockists and beauty training academies that use Bella Vi pure minerals,” Melissa says. “We take great pleasure in supporting our selected charities…the Look Good, Feel Better charity that works for women with cancer, the children’s Christmas Event and more. “Emma is passionate, and we have truly enjoyed the opportunity to be able to give to her, as well as our New Zealand causes and events with an open heart.” Emma – who says the proudest moment of her life was winning the Gold Medal for her beauty therapy exam – has competed in three other pageants, including the Miss World Supermodel competition in Taipei last year and being crowned Miss Earth Christchurch. She hopes to be a photographic model and study medicine, as well as develop and further her career in beauty therapy.

All this will need to ¬ t around her volunteer and charity work, which includes helping organisations such as CURE Kids, IHC, SAFE, Greenpeace, Look Good Feel Better and World Vision. She says she is indebted to her sponsors, who she hopes will benefit throughout the year from her personality and achievements.

“I feel I am a positive upbeat person who is more than happy to talk to and make time for anyone,” Emma says. “I’m sometimes loud and spontaneous, but I consider this a quality. I know that I am not perfect and that I have faults as we all do. I just try my best to be true to myself and enjoy my life while enhancing the quality of other people’s.”

Ketz-ke saw their Summer collection in with a Bang on Thursday at White Studios. Bella Vi make up

I love eyeshadow, it's my fix. Well, you gotta have something, it's a little weird maybe but I love trying them in different ways and playing around like I would with any new accessory. Playful and light for weekend days, more dramatic for night and whatever my mood is on a work day, they can reflect who I am just as much as my clothes do.

The Bella Vi eyeshadows are like that; amazingly versatile. They can be used dry for a softer everyday natural look, as a base colour, or wet for a more intense dramatic colour or eyeliner and dry for a softer everyday natural look.I dove straight in and used the Moonstone colour as a base then added other colours on top but thought I'd use my fingers to apply it and put way too much on. It's great that you only need a tiny amount, you'll think it's not enough but the colour really holds and blends with other other colours smoothly. Though I think it's time for me to get their oval fluff eyeshadow brush to help me a little more, like any artist, you need a good brush.

Here's Bella Vi's advice for how to put make your eyes look incredible:
Use light base colours to highlight the brow bone
Use medium colours on the eyelid and crease
Use dark colours to contour and define the outer eye socket and lash line
Apply base colour first then draw along lash line with eyeliner then apply the darker contour colours in the socket crease by pressing the powder onto the eyes using the Bella Vi oval fluff eyeshadow brush or a fine chisel eyeshadow brush.

WET: Mix a small amount of powder with water in the lid of your eyeshadow container ( wipe the lid out with tissue when finished) to create a crème eyeshadow and using a fine cheisel brush to draw along the lash line for a liquid eyeliner effect and also creates a dramatic luster of colour on the eyelid.

I can't wait to try out all these fabulous combinations:
Matte Beige, Iced Coffee, Matte Earth
Chantilly, Iced coffee, Aqua Marine
Moonstone, Candy Floss, Sugar plum or Exotic plum
Moonstone, Bare Beauty, Sassy girl
Matte beige, Gold, Mystic green or Mocha
Moonstone, Sky Blue, Blue Bells

Get your eyeshadow fix from beauty and hair salons and look more fabulous than ever with Bella Vi.

Transforming faces, turning heads
19 Apr, 2010

Bella Vi natural mineral-makeup is not only transforming faces, it’s turning heads.

An increasing number of women are taking note of just how good Bella Vi makeup looks, and how natural it is. The world is noticing a fast growing demand for premium, mineral-based skincare and cosmetics. Consumers are supporting products perceived to be more natural and lower risk than products containing synthetic ingredients.

Bella Vi – a 100 per cent developed, owned and operated New Zealand company.

Forget toxic synthetic chemicals – with Bella Vi you don’t get parabens, carmine made from crushed beetles, and scary sounding chemicals like bismuth oxychloride. Instead, Bella Vi is all-natural, and free of fillers, parabens and other impurities.

Bella Vi features a harmless blend of pure, crushed minerals and exotic natural oils, chosen to nurture your skin … not clog it, irritate it or harm it. Plus, pure mineral makeup powders are inorganic and contain no moisture so bacteria cannot grow in them. This makes them naturally long lasting with no need for preservatives like parabens.

Lengthy and extensive research has lead Bella Vi to it’s premium, mined-from-theground minerals. Not all mineral make-up products are the same, but the good news is you can tell a lot from the ingredients. Bella Vi minerals include zinc oxide, iron oxide, titanium and mica, for example, which are purified and processed into fine silky powders and must pass rigorous testing. Mineral make-up is made up of microscopic flat crystals that overlap each other on the skin.

Discerning women, especially those focused on good diet and lifestyle, are paying more attention to what is in the skincare and make-up products they are using. In fact, premium mineral make-up, such as Bella Vi products, is fast becoming the only choice for women dedicating themselves to healthier living.

Leading global research, by the NPD Group, shows mineral make-up is creating a huge revolution in the beauty industry – its popularity has increased by more than 30 per cent since 2003.

When natural beauty buyers were asked why they continue to purchase natural / organic beauty products, 80 per cent said they were better for their skin and 64 per cent said they didn’t want chemicals on their skin. Many (27 per cent) claimed the ingredients in traditional beauty products were harmful to their health.

It’s not so surprising therefore, that Bella Vi mineral make-up is suitable for all skin types and even problem skin. Beauty professionals and their clients not only love the look and feel of Bella Vi make-up, they also love the product’s natural hypoallergenic qualities. In fact, it is recommended for women with acne, skin allergies, dryness and pores clogged from traditional commercial make-up products, as it is breathable with a filtering layer.

Bella Vi has many strings to its bow beyond being all-natural and a great way to promote clear and healthy skin.

Customers attest it is easy to apply, taking only a light brush to achieve a flawless finish. It goes on in seconds and lasts all day, looking flawless and fresh. It gives a perfect coverage; doesn’t irritate; and goes a long way – only a little is needed per application. It also offers a complete colour range for all skin tones; it is safe to use after specialist procedures such as laser, waxing and IPL treatments; and of course it is ideal for sensitive and allergy-prone skin. It ticks all the boxes.

The product range encompasses foundations – with natural SPF protection – setting powders, bronzers, eye shadows, eyeliner, mascara, blushers, illuminisers, lip liners, lip sticks and gloss as well as an assortment of brushes.

All these products are exclusive to beauty clinics, cosmetic lazer clinics and hair salons. One beautician reported that clients “love it and are usually hooked when they see how easily they can get a beauty boost.” Another said Bella Vi seems to “inspire elegance and confidence in women.”

While mineral make-up is a growth industry, and Bella Vi is a thriving business, there’s no resting on their laurels for the Bella Vi team. They’ve always taken an innovative approach to product and the company’s operations, and this continues. The Bella Vi team works with leading world-wide innovative companies to retain its position of product and marketing excellence.

And the name? Bella Vi means “beautiful you” in the passionate Italian language. Just perfect, as it is the Bella Vi team’s passion for natural beauty that led to the creation of this stunning range of mineral make-up.

Not All Mineral Make-up Is Created Equally

How to choose pure mineral make-up
By Melissa Furze, Bella Vi

Mineral make-up is creating a huge revolution in the beauty industry. Beauty professionals and their clients love the look, feel and natural hypoallergenic qualities of these innovative products. Not all mineral make-up products are the same, but the good news for beauticians is that you can tell a lot about mineral makeup from its ingredients.

Mineral make-up is made up of microscopic flat crystals that overlap each other on the skin. The result is a breathable filtering layer. It is suitable for all skin types and especially recommended for women with acne, skin allergies, dryness and clogged pores from traditional commercial make-up products.
The silky feel and flawless finish associated with this fast growing cosmetic category is due to its natural ingredients – usually titania, mica, hematite and zinc oxide. These minerals scatter lightly when applied to the skin, giving your client a look of perfection.

Many of the ingredients found in mineral make-up are also found in some ‘look-alike’ products and traditional cosmetics. Pure mineral make-up is distinguished by what’s left out. To choose a true, pure, hypoallergenic mineral make-up, avoid products containing synthetic chemicals, parabens, Bizmuth Oxychloride, talc and other fillers.
Pure mineral make-up powders are inorganic and contain no moisture so bacteria can not grow in them. This makes it naturally long-lasting and it does not need preservatives like parabens.
Mineral make-up purists also shy away from products containing Bizmuth Oxychloride.  It is well documented that this compound can cause allergic reactions so people with sensitive skins and those wanting the hypoallergenic benefits of mineral make-up should avoid products containing it.

What you’ll find in most good mineral make-up products

Titania (Titanium Dioxide) – an opaque, pure white pigment that is a major ingredient in many mineral make-up products (approx 5% to 25%). It offers natural sun protection and anti-inflammatory properties, reflects light (only surpassed by diamonds!), has high coverage, and helps adhere make-up to the skin.

Mica – an almost colourless mineral with a layered structure made up of thin sheets or flakes. It is smooth and silky, and light reflective. Mica has the ability to layer which creates a smooth, even finish as it gives excellent adhesion. Mica is mixed with iron oxides and ultramarines to achieve stunning colours.

Hematite (Iron Oxides) – coloured pigments that give colour to mineral make-up. Many colours are used as colorants in mineral makeup: black, blue, yellow, red, orange, tan and various shades like blue/red. Without iron oxides mineral make-up would be white!

Zinc Oxide – this naturally occurring white pigment mineral has the greatest UV absorption of all pigments available, as it provides a natural resistance to UV rays. Zinc Oxide also has anti-inflammatory properties.

Other fillers like talc have attracted more frenzied safety debates. Regardless of your view on these issues, make-up products without fillers are believed to have greater staying power and a lighter feel.
There are quality differences between true mineral make-up products with apparently similar ingredients. This is down to variations in mineral quality, ‘cut’ and mixing techniques. Producing high quality mineral make-up takes time but it’s worth it to create a product that’s natural yet captivating and elegant.

Good blends of mineral make-up offer good business opportunities for beauty professionals. “Our stockists say that Bella Vi is very easy to sell,” says Bella Vi’s Melissa Furze. “Their clients fall in love with it. I encourage beauticians to put it on all their clients.  When clients see how easily they can get a beauty boost they are usually hooked.”

International Trends
14 Apr, 2010

Research has revealed that 32% of those surveyed want mineral-based ingredients in their make-up. According to the NPD Group, the popularity of mineral makeup has increased by more than 30 times since 2003, and 42% of female skin care users aged 18 and older said they look for products that are made from natural and/or organic ingredients. This is a good indication that the mineral make-up trend will continue to gain steam.

SunTrust Robinson Humphrey analyst William Chappell wrote in a late 2006 research note, “The mineral-based segment will be the fastest growing in the US$8b American cosmetics category over the next few years. The market is in its infant stages, currently representing less than 10% of the overall foundation market and less than 5% of the total cosmetics market. We see no reason why the segment cannot reach 20% of the foundation market or 15% of the cosmetics market in the next five years. This represents a US$1b opportunity in the US alone.”

After growing more than US$2b, to $6.1b, between 2002 and 2006, the natural and organic personal care products market is expected to post another increase by 2012, with projected sales of nearly $10.2b, according to Natural and Organic Personal Care Products in the US, a report from market research publisher Packaged Facts.

The Benchmarking Co. recently released its Pink Report™, The Age of Naturals, in which more than 1,800 women across the United States who regularly buy beauty products were surveyed. The report uncovers the attitudes, fears and aspirations of two specific groups of women: those who regularly buy natural/ organic beauty products, and those who buy traditionally-made beauty products.

It is clear that women who normally buy natural/organic beauty products have higher make-up and skin care aspirations than traditional beauty brand users, higher expectations for natural beauty product efficacy, and a higher tendency toward personal wellness and self-health.

Eighty-two percent of natural/organic beauty buyers want to look beautiful, yet natural, compared to 64% of their traditional beauty buying counterparts.

Natural beauty buyers want both cosmetics (84%) and skin care products (84%) to be free of harmful chemicals, compared to 56%of traditional beauty buyers for makeup and 54% for skin care products. In nearly every category, natural beauty users simply expect more from the products they purchase.

Of women who normally buy natural and organic brands, 45% said they do so because of their fear of chemicals in traditionally-made beauty brands. When natural beauty buyers were asked why they continue to purchase natural/organic beauty products, the top two reasons were they were better for their skin (80%) and they didn’t want chemicals on their skin (64%). Another 27% claimed the ingredients in traditional beauty products were harmful to their health.

Natural, beautiful make-up for a natural, beautiful you

By Bella Vi Pure Mineral Cosmetics

A healthier way of living is something most of us aspire to. Now, along with lifestyle and diet, mineral make-up can contribute to a more natural you.

Research shows that consumers are increasingly trending towards natural skincare and cosmetics as they become more aware of what is in the products they are using.

Mineral make-up is fast becoming the only choice for women dedicating themselves to healthier living because, unlike traditional cosmetics, most premium quality mineral make-up is free of fillers, parabens and other impurities.

Mineral make-up is often referred to as today’s miracle make-up. Pure mineral make-up is non-comedegenic, meaning it contains no ingredients that will clog pores, so it is gentle and kind to your skin. Women today want a clean, fresh, natural look, another reason why mineral make-up is a winner.

Mineral make-up provides a sheer to full coverage for a glowing complexion that lasts all day.

This season the trend is to match a glowing complexion with dramatic eyes or lips. For glamorous lips, play it up with red and rich berry colours. However, also remember that nothing looks more perfect than natural lips with a touch of nude or pale pink gloss. Black eyeliner is a must for eyes, along with dark eye shadow shades of brown, purple, and smoky grey.

Achieving a perfect, flawless complexion to show off dramatic eyes and lips is easy. Everyone can achieve this look because mineral make-up is so simple to apply.

Prior to applying the minerals, clean and moisturise your skin and give your skin time to absorb the moisture. First, shake the powder down in the container to ensure you are only using a small amount. With Bella Vi’s loose mineral powder only a small amount is needed for full, perfect coverage.

Dip your Kabuki brush into the powder sifter container and swirl the brush into the lid to pick up the powder into the bristles – this is the best way to ensure the brush is evenly coated. Tap off any excess powder and buff the pure minerals onto your face in a circular motion. Always start on your cheeks then move to your forehead and nose using a swirling motion. Use a small amount to start with for a lighter coverage and apply in layers for a full coverage. Keep buffing until you are satisfied with the look.

The secret to perfect application of mineral make-up is using the right brush and with so many different brushes available, finding the right one is essential.

Bella Vi only uses the Kabuki Mineral Make-up Brush which is by far the most popular brush for applying mineral foundation.

The design and style of these brushes is inspired by those used by traditional Japanese Kabuki performers to create their distinctive and impressive makeup displays. Kabuki brushes have dense, compact bristles that hold onto the minerals allowing them to be buffed onto the skin.

In creams (lipsticks, cream foundations, concealers etc) it is natural fibers that are the perfect partner for mineral powders. This is because, unlike synthetic fibers, natural hair has scales and is more porous, it is therefore better able to hold the minerals.

Bella Vi’s high quality Kabuki brushes are handcrafted using age-old techniques. The natural hair bristles are hand-tied, and the brush head is hand-cut into a rounded shape. This technique ensures a perfect brush every time.

There are five grades of natural bristle brushes and Bella Vi brushes are first class ZGF and second class BJF brushes – the highest quality available.

Correct care of mineral makeup brushes is essential. Salons must sanitise brushes between clients with isopropol alcohol or antiseptic spray. For individual users, Bella Vi recommends washing brushes with special brush shampoo or antibacterial soap at least once a week. Always dry your brush by gently pressing it with a towel to absorb any excess moisture then thoroughly air dry while laid flat. Never stand your brush up as moisture will run down into the handle and ruin the life and quality of the brush. Follow these simple rules for brush care and you will be rewarded with brushes that last.

Mineral make-up ticks all the boxes. It is simple and easy to apply, provides a natural, flawless look that lasts all day, is the perfect complement to any make-up trend and is natural and free from impurities. What more could you want from your makeup?

Humans are naturally wary of change, regardless of whether the benefits outweigh the current negatives that they are used to. Just as the antioxidant-rich dark chocolate has been trying to replace the high-fat alternative milk chocolate and green tea over caffeine and sugar-laden supersized lattes, mineral make-up has similarly been trying to make its way into women's cosmetic bags as the make-up of choice and good health.

The Egyptians didn't only provide us with luxurious thousand thread-count bed sheets and must-see sights such as the Great Pyramid at Giza and the 10kg gold death mask of Tutankhamun protected in the Egyptian Museum. Cleopatra, the last Pharaoh of Egypt, knew about the secrets of mineral make-up long before today's commercial brands jumped onto the bandwagon which has had a resurgence in the past five years.

Cleopatra's signature look and love of make-up was all about her cosmetic appearance. It would have been applied with precision by the best artists around and it was all about her eyes and mouth (unlike today's craze of only highlighting one feature at a time). She favoured lining her upper and lower eyelids black and stretching the ink toward her ears to create an 'almond' shape, painted brows that were impeccably defined and rouge cheeks and lips, a look, while far less dramatic today, we know as '1950s Hollywood glamour'.

The ancient Egyptians made eyeliner (kohl) from a mixture of soot and galena (a dark mineral of the metal family, lead sulphite) which was ground and mixed with oils and moisturisers. They `painted' their hair and nails using a paste made from the dye found in henna shrub leaves (henna is very popular today in countries including Dubai, India and Africa where locals draw patterns or `tattoos' on tourists arms or feet that can last up to six weeks). They flushed their cheeks and coloured their lips using mashed berries with crimson-shaded minerals such as ochre, a type of clay. They made perfumes by extracting oils and fragrances from flowers, and body lotions from animal fats and seeds. The intensity of colour (from the minerals) could be achieved by drying out or burning the minerals, similar to make-up artists' advice today — to heat an eye liner pencil with a flame for a more dramatic, longer-lasting evening look.

Unlike Cleopatra's vanity in `putting her face on', the people she ruled wore make-up for health reasons. They used kohl to protect their eyes from disease, the sun and flies, galena for its disinfectant qualities and oils and moisturisers to protect their skin from the harsh desert winds. There were also religious reasons where make-up wasn't just used for the ladies. The Egyptians believed that after someone had passed away, they needed to look their very best and take with them what they would need in the afterlife. The more famous they were, the more their body was adorned and their tomb embellished, such was Tutankhamun's with gold, chariots, a thrown, jewellery and life-sized statues of the young king himself!

Today's woman is seeking to combine both elements - the ability to look glamorous without poisoning her skin and body from the outside in.

As the Egyptians used naturally occurring ingredients, the difference today is that chemicals are also added to 'stretch' product (quantity over quality), 'bind' product (who can resist a convenient, hand-bag friendly compartment of lip, eye and cheek tint all-in-one?) and `age' products where make-up once opened can breed bacteria if not used within a

reasonable time-frame (a genius marketing tactic to get you to fall prey to each new season's 'must have' — one minute it's thick, clumpy full lashes, then it's separated, long, spider-leg lashes).

So, depending on whose marketing ploy you believe more, there seems to be equal amounts of evidence supporting `for' versus 'against' mineral make-up for the modern woman considering its historical basis. One need only visit one of the many tombs and temples in Egypt today to see columns and coffins engraved with hieroglyphics and depictions of everyday life that were painted with now-faded colours that would have been made from the same ingredients as Cleopatra's make-up. After 4000 years, it is quite remarkable to still be able to see proof of the once-vivid colours that have, to varying degrees, lasted the test of time with shades of terracotta, red, green, sand, cream and blue evident. However, others argue whether a queen would have used ingredients on her body that were possibly toxic and contaminated as opposed to the purification methods that occur today?

With images of the timelessly beautiful actress Elizabeth Taylor, who played Cleopatra in the 1964 film (which not surprisingly won an Oscar for best costume/make-up design), I set off to peruse the make-up counters at my nearest department store on my lunch break, to see what all the mineral make-up fuss was about. Adjectives including 'luminous', `youthful' and 'good for your skin' immediately lured me to snap up a `pink solitaire' blush. Before I could even think to turn over the packaging to inspect its list of ingredients, I handed over quite a lot more cash than expected in sacrifice for the overwhelming promise of a life-changing product. I locked myself in the bathroom and carefully twisted open the lid and with all the anticipation of a child opening presents on Christmas morning, I began to dab the rosy pigments on the apples of my cheeks just as I have used blusher for years.

I was suddenly blinded by a sparkly glow and as my eyes came back into focus, I was startled to see not myself in the mirror but a clown with red-rosy cheeks staring back. No-one had told me to apply it any differently, I protested inside. Failing to replace the lid, I flipped open my mobile phone and in a flurried panic, dialled the consumer hotline on the back of the blush tin — I was minutes away from giving an important presentation at work. The friendly consultant laughed and reassured me that I wasn't having an allergic reaction, rather that the mineral pigments are very concentrated and produce an intense flush of colour, so you need to tap off the excess powder from your brush before each application and just a 'dab' with the brush will suffice. Somewhat relieved as I ran my fingers down my cheeks
(causing even more redness), I wondered, what else didn't I know? 4
advisable to avoid mineral make-up containing:

Bismuth Oxychloride: It may irritate the sensitive skin, and cause redness and itching.

Dimethicone: A crosspolymer; a silicone derivative used as a stabilising or suspending agent or as a thickener; silicone derived emollients are occlusive. It is recommended to be restricted in cosmetics.
Carmine It is a crushed extraction from a variety of beetle for its red colouring. It may cause allergic reactions in some people.

Talc: It is an inexpensive filler and is used to bulk up the product; has no camouflage ability.
FD&C colour pigments: These are colorant dyes that are derived from coal tar may cause skin sensitivity and irritation.

Cornstarch: It is a vegetable ,starch and has a shelf life. It does not offer good adhesion nor does it protect against harmful UV rays. Parabens (methyl, propyl, butyl, and ethyl): Preservatives added to extend shelf life; have caused many allergic reactions and skin rashes; highly toxic.

It's the small things that count when times are tough Lick the economic blues with lippy
10 Apr, 2010

AN UNUSUAL sales trend is seeing women turn to lipstick to provide respite from the gloom of increased living costs. Booming lipstick sales have been reported in Tauranga and across the country, strengthening the theory that when times are tough people buy smaller luxury items to feel better. As odd as it sounds, the correlation between a tough economy and stellar lipstick sales dates to World War II and was observed after 9/11 when lipstick sales doubled in the US. The Cosmetic Fragrance and Toiletries Association has just reported lipstick sales in New Zealand are up 7.8 per cent on last year, while the sale of nail varnish rose 3.3 per cent.

Melissa Furze, managing director of natural cosmetics business Bella Vi in Otumoetai, said while some businesses were reporting slow trade, the demand for cosmetics had not been affected. ``Even though things are slowing down, women still like to look and feel good,'' Mr Furze said. ``Cosmetics are certainly selling. A lot of businesses are saying it's quiet, but we are finding it's quite busy.''

Bree Juson, manager of AURA Hair Face Body in Tauranga, said woman were not cutting back on buying lipstick. "For a lot of people that's what makes them feel good.'' Trudie McAllum, manager of The Body Shop at Bayfair, said women in particular still liked to look after themselves even when times were tight.
"They cut back on expensive holidays but they can still afford $20 or $30 for a new lipstick.'' She noticed people were selecting one or two special items rather than a whole range
